Checkpoint Champion is ideal for those wanting a bite-sized drifting game. Offering plenty of challenges that take mere seconds to complete, you’ll soon find yourself itching to shave milliseconds off your previous best time.
A lot of Checkpoint Champion’s success is down to how it gradually unlocks new things to do. For the first few minutes you’re tied into following a strict path of events, but soon enough you’ll have unlocked the event of the day, the randomized arena challenges, and you’ll be on your way to unlocking new cars, too. It works well in reminding you of the variety available.
Of course, in most cases the action is pretty similar. You tap on either side of the screen to dictate direction, while accelerating is automatic. You’ll be drifting a lot to negotiate various corners, and while it’s a little awkward to perfect, it’s quite satisfying when you do. Usually, you’re pursuing various checkpoints before heading towards the finish line. Time limits are tight but rarely unfairly so. And there’s always a restart button for when you really mess up.
Throughout, Checkpoint Champion reminds you of your friends’ high scores and this is where you’ll find yourself mildly hooked. There’s always that urge to beat them, especially when it comes to the event of the day. Unlocking new cars also works in motivating you, as they can make quite the difference in the long run.
Crucially though, it’s the fact that Checkpoint Champion is so simple to play in short bursts. Got five minutes spare? You can achieve something in that time. It’s that kind of mental factor that will draw you in. Throw in the little details like sharing video replays with friends, and you’ll find yourself itching for more. Checkpoint Champion is the ideal game to see expanded in the future, thanks to its three-star system. It’s good, simple fun.
